The fragile baby skin

Until the age of six, the skin of babies and children is many times – about five times – thinner than that of an adult. The sweat and sebaceous glands also do not work sufficiently to produce a hydrolipidic layer. This is a protective layer, consisting of fats and moisture, on the top layer of the skin, which the body produces itself. The hydrolipidic layer forms a barrier between the body and external influences.

Substances in contact with baby skin

You can imagine that thin skin, with hardly a protective layer, is extremely sensitive and vulnerable. Baby skin has less resistance and is extremely sensitive to chemical, physical and microbial influences. Substances that come into contact with the baby’s skin are more easily absorbed and penetrate deeper into the skin layers.
